Share a Printer

Most printers used with a computer are connected directly by a cable, or they are connected to a network. When you connect a printer directly to a computer, it can be used only by that computer. However, if a printer is connected to a network, several computers on the network can share the printer.

The ability to share a printer is a useful feature, because it allows several users to access the same printer, instead of having to connect several printers to the network. Sharing a printer involves several steps:

1. Make sure the printer is connected to the network.
2. On the computer with the printer, open the Printers and Faxes window.
3. Right-click the printer and select Properties from the popup menu.
4. Select the Sharing tab.
5. Check the box next to Share this printer.
6. Type a name for the printer in the Share Name text box.
7. Click Apply and then click OK.
8. The printer is now shared over the network.

Sharing a printer will allow other users on the network to access the printer. In order for the other users to have access to the printer, they must have permission to use it. To set permission for a printer, follow these steps:

1. On the computer with the printer, open the Printers and Faxes window.
2. Right-click the shared printer and select Properties from the popup menu.
3. Select the Security tab.
4. Check the boxes next to the users or groups who are allowed access to the printer.
5. Select the type of permission to be granted. The available permission types are Print and Manage Documents.
6. Click Apply and then click OK.
7. The users and groups will now have permission to access the printer.

By following these steps, you can easily share a printer with other users on a network, and set permission for the users and groups who can access the printer. This feature can save you time and money by allowing the same printer to be used by multiple users.
