Sharing a Printer

1. Determine if your printer is capable of being shared. Many printers now have a “network” or “wireless” option. If so, then your printer is capable of being shared.

2. Connect the printer to the network. If the printer is a wired printer, then use an Ethernet cable to plug the printer into a router or modem. If the printer is a wireless printer, then follow the instructions to set up the printer for your wireless network.

3. Install the printer on each computer that will use it. Depending on the operating system of the computer and the printer, you may need to download printer drivers or software to install the printer. Refer to the instructions that came with the printer or check the manufacturer's website for setup instructions.

4. Share the printer. On the computer to which the printer is connected, go to “Printers and Faxes” or “Devices and Printers.” Right-click on the printer and select “Share.” If necessary, enter a name for the shared printer and then click “OK.”

5. Access the shared printer. On the other computers that need to access the printer, go to the “Printers and Faxes” or “Devices and Printers” list. Click on “Add a Printer” and then select the shared printer from the list. You may need to enter a username and password to access the printer. Follow the remaining instructions to install the printer; after which, all of the computers can access the shared printer.
