Pride is one of the seven deadly sins; but it cannot be our sin, for it is a thing impossible to us. As a philosophical quality, it is odious and ridiculous in the extreme; it is the vice of narrow souls, and those that are weak and puffed up with fancied importance.
Pride is an assumption of superiority; it is a species of arrogance, and one of the most offensive of all vices. It is a base, ignoble sentiment, which leads us to arrogate superiority to ourselves, and to look down upon others with disdain and contempt. Pride is a quality incompatible with true wisdom; it shutteth out from the soul meekness and humility, which are the two great sources of true felicity.

Pride is the parent of envy, hatred, and malice; it is a root from which spring many misfortunes and sorrows. It stands in the way of friendship and true regard for our fellow-creatures; and in its worst form, is the spirit of arrogance and self-conceit, that leads us to “think of ourselves more highly than we ought to think.”

Pride is the source of all that is mean and despicable in human nature. It is the chief cause of our unhappiness, and of much of the wickedness that exists in the world. It was the seed-plot of the fall of the angels; it was the prompting influence that led our first parents to the heinous offence of partaking of the forbidden fruit.

Let us, then, beware of pride; let us aim at humility and self-abasement; let us be willing to acknowledge our own faults, and to recognize the excellencies of others. Let us not be elated with success, nor depressed by disappointment; but let us seek to be content in whatever state we are placed. Thus shall we seek humility in all things, and thereby ensure true happiness and peace.
