For those unfamiliar with the term, printer sharing is the ability to link two or more computers to a single printer. When one computer sends a print job, the printer will be able to accept the job and print it out regardless of which computer sent it.
Printer sharing can be done either through a local network or over the Internet, depending on the specific printer hardware and setup.
In order to share a printer internally, you will need to physically connect the printer to one of the computers, via USB or other connection. Then, you will need to set up the printer sharing settings on each computer.
On a Windows computer, you can access the printer sharing settings from the Control Panel. First, choose “Hardware and Sound” and then “Devices and Printers”. Once inside, right-click the printer you wish to share and select “Share this printer”.
On a Mac computer, you can access the printer sharing settings from the Printer Setup Utility. Choose “File” and then “Print sharing”. Here you can select which computer on the network will be allowed to share the printer.
Once the settings have been saved, other computers connected to the same network should be able to detect and access the printer.
Printer sharing can be an incredibly useful tool, both in the home and in the office. It can save you money and make it easier to access the same printer from multiple computers.
