Printer sharing allowed multiple computers and users to access the printer at the same time. The printer sharing setup was not perfect, however. The networked printer was slower than a direct connection, as many documents had to pass through the centralized printer before reaching the intended user. Additionally, multiple users could experience conflicts when several people were trying to send jobs to the same printer. Furthermore, the setup was also prone to hacking, as anyone with an IP address could gain access to the printer.

Despite these drawbacks, printer sharing was a boon to many businesses and organizations. It allowed multiple users to access a single device without having to purchase several printers, which greatly reduced costs. It also gave organizations better control over which users could access the printer, as access could be granted on a need-to-use basis. Printer sharing also made printing more efficient, as it allowed multiple users to utilize the same device at the same time.

Today, many of the problems associated with printer sharing have been solved by advances in technology. With the advent of cloud computing, organizations are now able to set up a virtual printer that can be accessed by multiple users from any device. This eliminates the need for a physical printer and allows multiple users to print jobs simultaneously with no need for a central device.
